JOHNSTOWN HISTORICAL COUNTY JAIL

 

The construction of the Jail began at the same as the Court House and like the courthouse, served its original purpose from then through to the present.  The first sheriff was Alexander White.

Sheriffs since the formation of Fulton County:   David McMartin (1838 - 1841), Napthalia Cline (1841-1844), Michael Thompson (1844-1847), Daniel Potter (1847-1850), Amasa Shipple (1850-1853), Elisha Bentley (1853-1856), Bradford Simmons (1856-1859), Austin Kasson (1859-1862), Jacob Miller (1862- 1865), James Peerson (1865-1868), William Brayton (1868-1871), Oliver Getman (1871-1874), John Dunn (1874-1877), Hiram Praim (1877-1880), Robert Humphrey (1880-1883), John Leavitt (1883-1886), Daniel Sutliff (1886-1889), John Leavitt (1889-1892), Charles Palmer (1892-1895), Jacob Shutts (1895-1898) and Martin Getman (1898-1901),
